When I was here, almost half the unit was travelers. It was a great unit with a 3:1 ratio, occasionally 4:1 (this was rotated pretty fairly amongst the staff). I was able to pick up as much OT as I wanted. Floating occurred, but only to other once units in the hospital, so I didn’t mind, plus that was how I got lots of OT. One of the units I floated to was a little cliquey, but there was no animosity between staff and travelers. The management was great too. Charge nurses were mostly helpful. As for being in Baltimore, I didn’t find it to be too bad. Obviously, when the sun sets, be mindful of where you’re at, but I lived downtown and rode scooters everywhere. I did not have a car the whole time I was there. I would absolutely go back to this unit again.

It really depends on the floor you’re on. I hated the first floor I was on as a traveler. They hated travelers, very unwelcoming, bitter, catty younger new grads who think they know everything with only 1 year of experience just because they went to Hopkins nursing school. Almost sorority like culture on this younger floor, nurse bullying, aweful experience there. Then, I changed floors after 3 months and totally opposite experience. Great people, teamwork, respectful, almost like a family very helpful and receptive to questions so I think it just depends on the floor there.

Good and bad

If you’re assigned to Weinberg, you will be taking a lot of call.  The majority of the call is given to the travelers.  Hopefully they have changed this….

Neuro ICU is essentially a PACU: you will be transferring both patients and post-oping two more later that day, every day. It’s not a hard job it’s just incredibly unfulfilling. Really easy actually. The techs do everything from I/Os to labs to trach care. But there’s a clear divide between staff and travelers (at least from the charge/mgmt’s perspective), and you will get called in on a Friday night just to sit on one patient while the two team leads online shop.

The medicine of Hopkins has the potential to be unmatched. The reality is that every aspect of the hospital (especially nursing admin) do not meet those same standards

My preceptor threw me under the bus because she clashed with me and I lost my contract. I had another preceptor when she was gone and he was great, but the damage was already done.
