Description

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Processes prescriptions using the pharmacy dispensing system, inventory management systems and electronic health record.
  • Responsible for accurately billing multiple insurances for complex specialty prescriptions. Performs insurance investigations and verification utilizing the electronic health record. Communicates appropriate information with patients or medical group staff regarding insurance coverage.
  • Fills and labels specialty medications using specific medication policies, procedures, and standard work.
  • Uses knowledge and understanding of various Medication Therapy Management (MTM )and clinical programs available to identify potential patients that should be enrolled or referred to the MTM or clinical program.
  • Manages the processes of shipping and packaging with minimal supervision by a pharmacist.
  • Packages finished prescriptions for shipping using specific packaging protocols considering multiple variables such as product-specific requirements, seasonal weather differences, and shipping destination. Ensures shipping charges are accurate. Orders and maintains shipping and packaging supplies.
  • Independently manages inventory at appropriate levels with minimal supervision of the pharmacist. Independently conducts scheduled audits to keep an accurate inventory, orders necessary products, sets appropriate minimum and maximum quantities on hand when appropriate and conducts inventory returns when appropriate.
  • Actively seeks out programs for patients to assist with copays, patient education materials, and needle disposal programs.
  • Communicates and enrolls patients in specialty pharmacy programs. Validates and documents preferences including delivery or pick up, copay method when applicable, additional education material, additional support material (i.e. sharps containers, bandages, pen needles, etc.). Completes all new patient intake procedures.
  • Trains and educates other technicians on specialty pharmacy operations, procedures, and workflow.
  • Schedules pharmacist consults and coordinates with ambulatory pharmacies to ensure the patient is appropriately managed per the Patient Management Program. Actively participates and contributes to the quality management program and performance improvement initiatives. Completes non-clinical patient outreach to identify issues to refer to a pharmacist including adherence, adverse events, inappropriate administration, and changes to medication regimen or dosing. Identifies when special consultation is needed and flags prescription accordingly based on protocols set forth by the specialty pharmacist
  • Communicates with patients over the phone and in-person to coordinate patient care. Addresses patient customer service issues and complex insurance or billing issues that are inhibiting the patient from refills or dispensing the medication.
  • Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


EDUCATION

  • High school diploma or equivalent


EXPERIENCE

  • Two years experience

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.
  • Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication. Ability to hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.
  • Frequent keyboard use/data entry.
  • Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting and gripping.
  • Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
  • Rare climbing.
