Homer, AK
About
Located 223 miles from Anchorage on the Kenai Peninsula in southcentral Alaska, the town of Homer is surrounded by breathtaking Alaskan wilderness with an incredible panorama of soaring mountains, snow-dusted volcanic peaks and glistening blue-tinged glaciers. An artsy community, it has a reputation as the region's cultural capital, with many art galleries, museums and music and live theater venues. Coffee bars and eateries with menus often focused on fresh seafood can be found on nearly every corner. The Homer Spit is its most iconic feature, a narrow, long piece of land that juts into Kachemak Bay and popular for fishing, beachcombing and wildlife watching with everything from seals and whales to bald eagles. Just across the Bay, the 350,000-acre Kachemak Bay State Wilderness Park is an outdoor adventurer's paradise for hiking and paddling, including opportunities to come face-to-face with a glacier.
