Augusta, ME

About

Augusta is Maine's capital city and the easternmost state capital in the U.S. Located in the central part of the state just an hour from Portland, the Kennebec River, often overlooked by the copper-domed capitol building, divides the city. A riverside trail stretches for 6.5 miles from the Memorial Bridge, providing an ideal place for a walk or a run, while Mill Park anchors the north entrance to the historic downtown. The park lies along the river with sloping hills popular for sledding in the winter, and from spring through fall, the park hosts a farmers' market. Downtown Augusta is fun to explore, with its picturesque waterfront and Victorian architecture housing shops, restaurants and brewpubs. Learn more about Augusta's and Maine's history in the Maine State Museum and the Old Fort Western Living Historic Museum, which sits within New England's oldest surviving fort, dating back to 1754.
