School Nurse

SCHOOL NURSE QUALIFICATIONS: * Valid New Jersey certification as School Nurse. * Valid New Jersey state license to practice as a registered nurse. * Degree in school nursing. REPORTS TO: Principal JOB GOAL: To provide the fullest possible educational opportunity for each district student by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in the district schools. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: * Carry out written orders of the medical home and standing orders of the school physician. * Conduct health screenings which include height, weight, blood pressure, hearing, vision, and scoliosis. Monitor vital signs and general health status for emergent issues for pupils suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and controlled dangerous substances. * Maintain pupil health records. * Recommend to the school Principal those pupils who shall not be admitted to or retained in the school building based on a parent's failure to provide evidence of the child's immunization according to the specified schedules. * Annually review pupil immunization records to confirm with the medical home that the medical condition for the exemption from immunization continues to be applicable. * Recommend to the school Principal exclusion of pupils who show evidence of communicable disease. * Direct and supervise the emergency administration of epinephrine and training school staff designated to serve as delegates. * Administer asthma medication through use of a nebulizer. * Direct and supervise the health services activities of any school staff to whom the certified school nurse has delegated a nursing task. * Classroom instruction in areas such as drug use and abuse, nutrition, phases of anatomy and physiology. * Review and summarize available health and medical information regarding the pupil and transmitting a summary of relevant health and medical information to the Child Study Team. * Write and update annually, the individualized health care plan and the individualized emergency healthcare plan for pupils' medical needs and instruct staff as appropriate. * Write and update annually, any written healthcare provisions required under Section 504 for any pupil who requires them. * Implement and assist in the development of healthcare procedures for pupils in the event of an emergency. * Instruct teachers on communicable disease and other health concerns. * Formulate objectives of the school health program within the framework of the school district philosophy. * Care for the sick and injured. * Confer with teachers about their observations and any specific health, welfare and social concerns. * Follow through with parents and school personnel regarding health problems, emergencies and crisis situations. * Perform such other duties as assigned by the building principal. * Report any suspected child abuse cases to proper authorities. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Ten, eleven or twelve month year. Salary to be according to the current schedule. EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with state and board regulations/policies by the building principal.
