Public Health Nurse II (Clinic Float Nurse)


Description The Johnston County Health Department has a vacancy for a Public Health Nurse to work a schedule rotating within all health department clinics including Child Health, Behavioral Health, Epidemiology, Primary Care, and Women's Health. This nurse will interact with patients throughout the lifespan in all clinic areas to provide direct patient care. The Public Health Nurse is responsible for working in clinics under the direction of the Nurse Supervisor(s) and Nursing Director. Duties and Responsibilities The Public Health Nurse is a practice based nursing position working with a multidisciplinary team providing care for health department patients, including those who may be at risk for poor health outcomes or have special medical or psychosocial needs. Clinical opportunities for this nurse include working with Women's Health, Epidemiology, Behavioral Health and Primary Care for both Adult and Pediatric patients. This position will work in clinics to interview patients, collect and enter information into an electronic medical record, provide education, assist with procedures, administer vaccines and other duties as necessary. We are looking for an experienced nurse with the ability to establish rapport with others quickly and communicate effectively with staff and community partners. This nurse will need to be able to work independently and in the team environment. This position will be part of a team that works throughout the building including a triage nurse, case manager and a licensed practical nurse. This position will interact with all health department staff and requires flexibility and a strong knowledge of the nursing process. Public Health Nurses are involved in county shelters and emergency response as the need arises. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Considerable knowledge of, and skill in, the application of nursing theory, practice, principles, and techniques employed in the field of public health and related programs; considerable knowledge of and ability to apply the principles and practices of public health; knowledge of available resources and organizations and the ability to coordinate these as needed; general knowledge of current social and economic problems relating to public health, including health disparities; ability to plan, coordinate, and oversee the work of others; ability to deal tactfully with others and to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions; ability to work in partnership with patients and with other service providers to elicit needed information and to maintain effective working relationships; ability to record accurately services rendered and to interpret and explain records, reports, and medical instructions; adequate computer skills to allow communication, patient record documentation, and accessing of information. Desired Education and Experience Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and one year of professional nursing experience. Necessary Special Qualifications - A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the N. C. Board of Nursing. Administering the Class - Individuals employed in a local Health Department as a Public Health Nurse will complete the "NC Public Health Nurse Credentialing Course" within one year of employment.
