TITLE: School Nurse QUALIFICATIONS: * B.S. Degree in Nursing, Masters preferred * Licensed to practice in North Carolina * Prior experience in a school setting is preferred SALARY: In accordance with the adopted state scale + local supplement BENEFITS: Full Benefits REPORTS TO: Principal, District Health Coordinator JOB GOAL(S): To enhance academic progress in the schools by working to improve the health status of students. To prevent health problems from becoming reasons for academic or social failure. To increase student, faculty and community awareness of ways to prevent health problems. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: * Provides school nursing services. * Serves as a member of the school nursing team along with nurses from the Orange County Health Department. * Works with Orange County Health Department staff to review immunization records determining compliance with NC Immunization Law and assists parents with obtaining immunization. * As appropriate, assists in the identification of health problems of exceptional children by attending special services meetings responsible for placement of this population and advising school staff on the health management of students with special needs. * Responds to referrals from school staff on health concerns by making a nursing assessment and providing appropriate counseling and helping the student and/or his or her family to obtain needed care. * Provides research and information to faculty, students and parents on health topics as requested and provides nursing input and leadership in selected health areas. * Provides follow-up to regularly scheduled health screening in the schools. Such follow-up includes the notification of parents and assisting the student and his or her family to obtain needed care. * Provides services to students with special health needs. * As appropriate, participates with the Core Teams in the secondary schools and provides nursing follow-up to students when indicated. * Participates on system-wide committees as needed. * Records appropriate written and verbal communication of all nursing activities. * Communicates with other school and community professionals regarding health issues in the schools. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Ten-month year. Salary in accordance with the adopted schedule. EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of Classified Personnel.
