Nurse - Juvenile Detention


General Summary: To provide health services for the Brazos County Juvenile Services Department. Essential Duties: Conduct health care assessments on all detainees in a thorough and timely-manner. Dispense medication to children and prepare medication packets for staff to give to children during nurse's time off. Develop and implement health and hygiene classes for detained residents. Initiate medical files on residents and maintain accurate records concerning assessment results, medication dispensing, and diagnostic evaluations. Assist in other health needs as directed. Communicate medical issues (i.e. medical follow-up, special diets, etc.) To caseworker. Coordinate doctor's visits. Update doctor's standing orders and maintain an accurate listing. Maintain documentation necessary for TJPC audits in medical section. Provide temporary or emergency care to sick or injured children. Manage infectious disease control. Maintain and secure juvenile health record files. On call 24 hours a day, subject to irregular work hours. Coordinate with pharmacies for medication ordered for residents. Order, inventory and maintain all medical supplies. Follow established policies, procedures and practices of the department. Abide by the Texas Juvenile Probation Commission's Code of Ethics. Maintain security and confidentiality of all case information, files and chronos as required by the Texas Family Code. Preferred: Physical Demands Typical: Duties require daily standing, walking, sitting, talking and listening; frequent use of hands and/or fingers to grasp, handle, pick-up, pinch, type or feel; frequent reaching with hands or arms and lifting of objects over 50 pounds; close vision, distance vision, ability to distinguish color, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Typical: Must have working knowledge of first aid, pharmacology, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation; and have the ability to administer injections. The Nurse must have the ability to work effectively with children, staff, and the general public, the ability to respond effectively and calmly in emergency situations requiring medical judgments and decisions, the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and must possess basic computer knowledge and competence. Work Environment Typical: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is constantly required to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, to work under time pressures to meet deadlines and to work closely with others as part of a team; the employee is frequently required to do tedious exacting work.
